You remember that pilot horror story I told you guys about when my pilot bit the big one? Well...have you ever seen the Six Million Dollar Man? TV show? You know, the dude who fell into a million pieces when he took a wrong turn going mach 12?<G> He got put back together again, but much better the second time around. Well, my Six Million Dollar Pilot (actually it's more like $60 pilot VBG>) has been given a second chance...better and stronger than ever before. 1st, the screen is fixed. 2nd, I took my old 1 meg memory card that I had saved when I shipped my old pilot 1000 to 3Com for an upgrade to a backlit PalmPilot-Pro. I took a blow torch (really) and heated up the old memory board until the chips (2 512K memory chips, and an AND gate) fell off it. I then soldered the chips on the back of the existing palm-pro memory board, and lo-and-behold I got me a 2 Meg palm pro (and I have it 75% full already!)pipeline.com I then got tired of putting in new batteries every other week, so I bought some rechargables. The neat part is that the batteries really never need recharging in the sense of removing them and installing them in a charger. I built a solar panel!pipeline.com pipeline.com For those who are interested in the components:pipeline.com pipeline.com I have been very pleased with the results. The panel slides over the pilot and doubles as a screen protector (no more cracked screens <G>). The batteries (must be NImH, not nicads) will charge in a couple hours on a totally overcast day next to a window. I have never put it in direct sunlight...the heat may not be so good for the pilot/batteries. The panel is regulated to avoid overcharging. Pretty cool dweeb-project, no?
