I think Alonso is pissed that Soto got a 15 year contract averaging 51M a year till he reaches the age of 41 and the Mets won't give him more than 3 years at 30M a year.

I understand where Alonso is coming from, but I think he is making a faulty comparison and is living in Alice in Wonderland.

Sure, both players are sub par defensively and are not good base runners. But Soto is a great hitter, one of the best in the game. Alonso cannot compare to Soto at the plate.

Moreover, Alonso is a one dimensional power hitter and his power stats are declining. This guy was so unclutch during the regular season.

I think Stearns is right. There is no need for him to compete against himself. No one is running to give Alonso the long term deal he wants. Look at Ryan Howard: his contract was an albatross around the Phillies necks for years as his performance declined. Can the same thing happen to Soto? Yes, of course. At some point, Soto is going to be a full time 51M designated hitter.

But getting back to Alonso. The Mets can easily withstand losing Alonso. Move Vientos to first and with Mauricio, Acuna and Mcneill around, second and third base will be taken care of easily.

And Stearns and Cohen know it.
