vertical integration model is a better path to commercial success then a so called "virtual" integration model ala W-D.

If Pierre were here, he would say(and has said) that vertical integration(and leverage) is like alcohol. It makes the good times better and the bad times worse. I don't drink but I'm still able to grasp the analogy. That sums it up from my POV.
