CUBE should sell its VCD business and use the proceeds to buy back stock and/or expand DVD and its other digital product lines, here are some potential buyers; February 20, 1998 (TAIPEI) -- To add value to their products, several Taiwan IC packaging firms established strategic alliances with wafer foundry makers in an effort to vertically integrate. Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc., Siliconware Precision Industries Co., Ltd. and Orient Semiconductor Electronics Ltd. are among the companies vertically integrating to take advantage of the sharp growth in the Taiwan IC packaging industry. Industry sources said the measure helps professional IC packaging firms secure a source of clients and maintain orders at a steady level, as well as boost productivity and expand market share. United Microelectronics Corp. has long been in an alliance with Siliconware Precision. Now, the two companies are planning to cooperate with Realtek Semiconductor Corp. to establish a new packaging firm. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd., in order to meet rising demand for packaging services, announced that it will chip in to set up an IC-packaging joint venture with Acer Inc. and South Korea's Anam Electronics Co., Ltd. Local semiconductor manufacturers said vertical integration among IC design, wafer foundry and IC packaging firms is set to become an even more prominent trend in the future. Packaging firms said that while forming alliances with specific wafer makers may prevent them from receiving orders from other wafer manufacturers, the partnerships should nevertheless pay off in the long run. They added that the present financial difficulties of Korean companies also are proving beneficial to local manufacturers. (Commercial Times, Taiwan)
