The Romans Campaigned in Scotland right the way up the East Coast, but did not stay for long, and retreated back to Hadrians Wall in CE 162, and hung on there for a couple of centuries. Hadrian's Wall was frontier country. There was a huge concentration of troops there. Half of them would be Foreign Legions, they did most of the military assignments, and half of them would be Roman Legions. They were there as back up and to quell any ideas of rebellion by the Foreign Legions. I have visited several of the Forts and Parade grounds. Considering the communications and transport methods back then (and tax systems to pay for the troops) it really is amazing what they did.
