I didn't get through my college degree at the first attempt, had to go find a job during a recession... and there were no jobs.

Got a job as a Chalk Boy for these guys. No computers or calculators in those days.

Betting on Sports, Casino, and Bingo Games | Coral

So I did OK chalking up the odds, and then they trained me up, first as a cashier, then as a Settler.

I could settle a six horse all bets (except singles) accumulator in under a minute. The guys who were using the new calculators were slower, and regarded as wussies.

Most of the time was just crossing off losers of course.

Later I went back to college and finished my degree in Physics and Chemistry. The job situation had improved, and there was a desperate shortage of qualified semiconductor engineers. I had a job working in a semiconductor biz as a tech and given all the tea boy type jobs. Little did they know I was holding a degree card, until I decided to show it at a job application.

It was easy peazy after that.
