The G7 is longing for the good old days of the 1980s. The block was all harmony. With a simple accord, Plaza or Louvre, the finance ministers could change and stabilise international financial markets. Russia was crumbling. American bases peppered Germany and people still believed Germany would put up a fight. Meanwhile, deep in debt, Emerging Markets -then the Third World- exported capital to the G7 countries. Reagan and Thatcher were the leaders of the West. No, I didn't read this in a book. I was there. What the US wants under Trump wants is the old 1980s. A world with no pesky Chinese displaying technology prowess or Russians putting up a fight. Hence the need for America to bulk up. Bring back that 1980s' assertiveness. Today's model isn't Reagan or Thatcher. Today's model is Javier Milei who showed how fighting back is done
