I just told my mother (who called to tell me about the fires) that it sort of reinforces how "stuff" is really just stuff... and how my goal is to one day get my life to the point all my important "stuff" fits on a flash drive. My mother then asked me: If the Mona Lisa were on fire as well as a person standing next to it, and you could only save one, which one? Umm... I hate to say it, but most people -- for good reason -- would pick the Mona Lisa. Not agreeing or disagreeing, just pointing this out.

And, btw, at some point autonomous cars are going to have to make a choice of whether to hit a kid who walks in front of the car vs turning off the road and hitting a wall, thus destroying the car and perhaps killing the passenger. Someone has to program these sorts of decisions.
