You don't have to pay interest if you have money to ride out the swings. Having money was my first point.

Assume you shorted BOIL after it hit its low in 2012. That would be ~$550K. It then more than slightly doubled to ~$1.2M in 2014. After that the next bottom was ~$46K in 2016.
I don't know what kind of loan sharks you deal with, but none that I know of would have charged you 100% interest.
But you don't have to barrow. Set aside $100k and short $25K of BOIL. Then wait until it peaks. Lever up with your profits at the same 1:3 ratio.
