There are enhancements for CDMA, such as smart antenna technology. Also what really has escaped most is the interconnection of the the two systems to the overall telephony network. GSM is tweaked and design to interface with the traditional wireline T-1/E-1 TDMA architecture, which isn't the growth or replacement course of the the future in wireline. That will be Frame relay and inparticular ATM. Look at what the networks the newer CLEC's are building.

From the Lucent site:

"On the transport layer, the most significant advance is the use of ATM. From the performance point of view, ATM reduces variation in the delay parameter and permits the fast packet switching necessary for the access of broadband on demand. Its flexibility allows connection of any desired capacity, improves bandwidth utilization, enables integrated network for traffic and signaling. From the cost point of view, ATM implements standard OA&M functions and allows leverage from common technology for both transport & switching."

As you see CDMA or IS-95 was design for advantage that is going to be the future of telecommunications. Not some 1950-60's technology, which is TDMA, with roots as far back as 1920's. What Ericsson has done is pulled a Wintel, instant obsolences. Now they want to claim to have developed real CDMA. Hogwash. They developed nothing. There is now claims of the W-CDMA variety that it can be a 5Mhz channel upto a 20 Mhz channel. That isn't the stuff of patents. Hell, lets file one tommorrow for 2 x pi!! That is wider than Ericssons.

IS95 was pegged at 1.25 Mhz for one reason, the FCC frequency allocation for licensing PCS.

As to GSM new and improved capacity figures, how much does it cost to implement. Sounds like microcelling and that is more hardware and towers. So much for the claim of cost advantage. It's still backward technology that is going to be replaced by more forward thinking replacemnt/deployment of ATM/Frame relay. Data which is now the engine that can, demands it. Well there was a 60's song that went something like "Teardown paradise to put up a parking lot". Time to get rid of the parking lot and replace it with paradise.

Now for something totally different:

nokia.com
qualcomm.com

QCOM with a 1200 mAh battery get more talk time than Nokia with a 1500 mAh battery. QCOM phone weighs less. I forgot it comes in 27 flavors, or is that Baskin Robbins.

It was stated at the annual meeting that IS95-C will be available in 1999 and will have twice the capacity of the current model.
