Baird, it's also ironic that in a place such as San Francisco, which supposedly has a very liberal city government, there are throngs of beggars and homeless people on the streets of San Francisco. The fact is, if you're homeless and cold in the US, then you're either very inept at availing yourself to the government's largess, or those homeless and beggars simply enjoy being homeless. I've heard of numerous first-hand reports that those "food-for-work" sign-people are doing what they're doing strictly because it's good, easy money. At the end of the day they fold their sign and discretely make their way back to their warm house.

Oh, and if you offer to pick them up the next morning to give them a ride to their new job working for you -- if you don't get cursed at first, then you'll likely to be waiting a long time the next morning for the person to show up. These reports are from people I know who have sincerely offered their assistance to these so-called homeless people.
