'Super Scoopers' firefighting planes arrive from Canada as LA County prepares for peak fire season

The annual arrival of 'Super Scooper" firefighting planes from Canada unofficially marked Los Angeles County's preparation for the peak fire season.

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- For the 30th year in a row, "Super Scooper" firefighting planes have arrived in Los Angeles County from Canada, an annual development that unofficially marks local firefighters' preparations for the region's peak fire season.

Now that the fire season in Quebec is winding down, the planes have made their southern migration to help with wildfires for at least the next 90 days.

Along with the planes, which are capable of scooping up 1,6000 gallons of water in 12 seconds, the Los Angeles County Fire Department on Thursday showed off some of the agency's other tools to fight flames from the air.

There are nearly 30 aircraft at the ready. So, just how busy is the fall wildfire season expected to be?

According to L.A. County Fire Chief Anthony Maronne, heavy rains that fell this year, including those from tropical storm Hilary, have now created a "good news, bad news situation."

"That rain has caused vegetation to grow," Maronne said. "And that vegetation -- when the Santa Ana winds arrive in the fall in October and November, that vegetation is going to grow out and that's going to become fuel for a wildfire. "

Southern California Edison is contributing $35 million dollars to help with the firefighting efforts. Cody Tubbs, a spokesman for the utility, said a large percentage of its customers live in fire-prone areas.

"One-fourth of our Southern California's service area is in high fire-risk areas," Tubbs said. "And that's why we're continuing to harden the grid, deploying artificial intelligence and other technologies, utilizing weather stations -- all of which enhances our situational awareness to help us cut any risks that could pose wildfire potential in our communities."

Why doesn't the county simply purchase its own Super Scoopers?

The Fire Department noted that it's less expensive too lease them, adding that two of the Canadian planes being used in L.A. County are no longer in production.

Letter of Special Commendation: Deputy Chief Kristin Crowley - The Relief (lafra.org)
December 1, 2020

ON THE MORNING OF NOVEMBER 9, 2018, Deputy Chief Kristin Crowley and her wife, Hollyn Bullock left their home in Redondo Beach, dropped their children off at school, then drove north to Malibu Canyon. They were headed to the home of a close family member to assist with evacuation and brace the home for the fire’s arrival. They thought they were in for a few hours of brush clearing and home prep. The Woolsey Fire was on its way to becoming one of the most destructive wildfires in recorded history. Chief Crowley and her wife had no idea they were heading towards the firefight of their lives. Crowley is the department’s first female Fire Marshall. Her wife had recently retired as an apparatus operator after 28 years with the LAFD. Crowley and Bullock helped their family member evacuate safely, then spent the morning prepping homes and clearing brush from neighboring homes. As the fire drew nearer, Crowley and Bullock convinced the remaining homeowners to evacuate before it was too late. Crowley and Bullock decided to stay and protect as many homes as possible. In good conscience, they could not leave knowing the entire block would likely burn to ashes.

They weighed their risks and planned their meeting points. They knew they wouldn’t be able to call for back-up or additional fire resources. They had no cellular service. Just the two of them in their turnout gear, using shovels, buckets of pool water, and garden hoses, they split up and defended that neighborhood until their water supply ran out. Back and forth, from one home to another, Crowley and Bullock fought back the flames from porches and doorsteps. They battled through triple-digit temperatures, heavy smoke, and exhaustion. After 16 grueling hours, it was time to stand down. Together, Crowley and her wife saved 9 out of the 10 homes on that street. Deputy Chief Crowley is receiving the department’s Letter of Special Commendation for her off-duty actions to protect a Malibu Canyon neighborhood surrounded by wildfire.

Brumar,
Like smart-ass school children, they’re leveraging an unfolding natural disaster as a chance to shout stupid nicknames at California’s governor, making up nonsense out of whole cloth and pointing fingers in whatever direction lunkhead conspiracy theorists tell them to point.
It's been said many times before, but I'll say it again.

Idiocracy was supposed to be satire, not a documentary.

Guess which ones in that clip represent liberal elitists, and which ones represent MAGA ...
