Baird, in the Gulf War, it was the U.N. who did not give the authorization for the allied task force to drive to Baghdad. Whether there were concerns of "balances of power", I suppose there were. But clearly George Bush felt that in order to keep full support, he had to stay within the objectives of the U.N. --- Exactly what Clinton is doing also. You might be interested to know that according to a news story, last week both President Clinton and Madeline Albright have had telephone conversations with former Pres. George Bush.

I and 36% of other Americans feel that Clinton should forget about the UN for awhile, and go in and remove Saddam. I think we should completely take over Iraq. Simply taking out Saddam isn't going to be a permanent solution - someone just like him will fill his place -- that's how it always is in these non-democratic countries. We need to go in there and stay in there for a good long while, if anything is really going to be accomplished with a lasting impact.

re I was referring to the use of pepper spray by police on an indigenous people (U.S. citizens).

What do you have exactly against pepper spray? It's not a toxic substance; it's pepper. Don't you put pepper on your eggs? Would you rather that police just kill people who won't respond to commands? I don't understand your position on that either. Again, comparing pepper spray use by anyone with Saddam gassing his own people is not worth talking about.

Re When you get into the realm of violence all kinds of ideals, principles, and people get sacrificed -- usually in the name of ideals and principles

It all depends on what one feels are the principles worth fighting for. Unfortunately, the U.S. exists in a non-ideal world, and we have to deal with reality with that in mind, with the objective of freeing the world of tyranny from people like Hitler, etc. The language of despots is violence, and the American people (for the most part) are willing to speak that language when no other language gets the point across.

Baird,

It was NOT our goal or in the charter of the operation to remove Saddam from power via the military activity in the Desert Storm operation. It was our goal to liberate Kuwait.

IF he became a casualty via our operations, then many people would have been very happy. We obviously didn't get him via the sorties and other activites.
