Scott,
Thanx for validating Erics take on "layer 3" and the new routing/switching paradigm. Trying to understand the complex world of engineering (coming from a medical background) is really a challenge for me as an investor in this technology. But the press releases (i.e., 3 Com is setting up a cellular phone company's routerless system using switches at 1/10th the cost for 10 times the speed, blah, blah, blah) really makes me wonder if I'm with the right company!!! As a humble investor with only so much money, I try to buy only the leaders...now and for the future. I depend a great deal on posts from people like you.
Mike

Scot,
Re -- I believe the real solution will be routing at much higher layers than layer 3!

That may very well be true, but if the lower layers form the bottleneck, no amount of "intelligence" at higher layers can alleviate that. The speed of the slowest link within the OSI model.
