Personally, I love the Pumpkins. I introduced my daughter to their music when she was a teen, and it's been fun sharing that connection. While most people would probably consider them a grunge rock band, I think they certainly have some prog-like elements in their music.

Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is a fantastic album—grunge prog at its best! If I had to pick their most 'proggiest' (is that even a word?) songs from the album, I'd go with the title track, even though it's pretty short, Porcelina of the Vast Oceans and Thru the Eyes of Ruby. That album is packed with so many great songs

Another excellent example is Glass and the Ghost Children from Machina.

On the topic of vocals, Billy's voice can definitely be an acquired taste for many. That said, it’s so distinctive that I can’t imagine another singer fitting their music quite the same way.
