I get what you're saying about the challenge of defining prog, especially if we stick to the strict, classic version of the genre. In my opinion, the term 'progressive' itself allows a lot of room for deviation. I’ve always thought of prog as more about breaking boundaries and experimenting rather than sticking to a specific formula.

I agree that alternative music often overlaps with that progressive mindset. Bands like Radiohead are a great example—they’ve consistently broken conventions and redefined their sound in ways that remind me of classic prog. Same for Tool or perhaps Haken.

I'm not very familiar with Echo and the Bunnymen so I can't comment on them. As for Asia, I admit they were a bit more polarizing—more polished AOR than traditional prog. That said, I still liked them and even have my old Asia t-shirt around here somewhere. :-)
