"Since they make encoders, I have to assume they (CUBE) could make them for Divx along with DVD." Good point!!!
Divx did delay the acceptance of DVD. However, going forward the presence of both products in the market place will increase the public's awarenness and acceptance of digital video. This is the same principal as the one that operates to induce car dealerships to locate near each other. Divx will be a positive for CUBE

This is what John Hagedorn had to say about Divx.........................

Q:What do you believe will be the impact on C-Cube and the DVD player market of the Divx format recently proposed by Disney and Circuit City?A:The advent of the second DVD format will impact C-Cube only to the extent that it delays the mass market acceptance of DVD.* C-Cube can produce MPEG-2 decoders for use in both standard DVD and Divx players. Some of our existing DVD customers have committed to manufacture the Divx players.

In the short run, we do believe that the announcement of Divx will retard the sale of DVD players, since the Divx players will not be available until the spring of 1998, and the standard DVD players cannot play a Divx disk. However, longer term, Divx may increase the acceptance of DVD, because it will provide more choices for the consumer. For, example, it will enable limited viewing at a lower cost. It will enable renewal of viewing privilege without a trip to the video store. It may facilitate the proliferation of movie-of-the-month and game-of-the-month club distribution in the Divx DVD format.
