VANCOUVER, WASHINGTON, U.S.A., 1998 FEB 19 (NB)

-- By Patrick McKenna, Newsbytes.

Approximately one-third of Hewlett-Packard's [NYSE:HWP] vancouver-based ink jet assembly employees received news their jobs were eliminated. One thousand workers will be offered other opportunities as HP undertakes a six-month process to transfer assembly to outside contractors.

HP spokesperson Beth Quartarolo said the announcement was a continuation of a trend within HP and the computer industry in general. "We have been using contract manufacturing around the world for high volume production of our ink jet printers. At the same time, we want our customers to know that we will not compromise on the quality we are known for."

...According to HP, outsourcing high volume assembly results in extensive savings.
