Canadian universal healthcare isn’t free, it’s funded collectively through taxes, so everyone pays into the system based on their ability, and in return, healthcare is available when people need it, without direct out-of-pocket costs at the time of care. It’s more about spreading the cost across the population to make it manageable for everyone.

Your experience highlights why so many Canadians value their system. Having four surgeries and a skin graft without the stress of bills piling up is a huge benefit. In the U.S., the same procedures could indeed cost tens of thousands of dollars, not even factoring in travel and lodging if specialized care is needed. That’s a significant burden for many people, especially those without adequate insurance.

Universal healthcare isn’t perfect, but it shows the strength of prioritizing access over ability to pay. It’s a system built on the idea that health is a right, not a privilege.

I just invented a good slogan for healthcare = From each according to their abilities, to each according to their needs. In fact, that should work for housing, food, electricity, cars ...

Then everyone could have a right to health care, housing, food, electricity, cars, computers, clothing, airline travel, road use.

Simply, adopt the slogan, MORE FREE STUFF as government policy.

Then everyone could have a good lifestyle and not have to worry about bills.

I wonder if anyone else has ever thought of my great new idea.
