Sly, I'm skeptical of some of the claims that Deepseek's leader has made.

For example, he claims that he successfully built Deepseek by hiring a bunch of inexperienced college grads with no more than a few years of experience each.

Based on my "experience with inexperience," I call B.S. on this.

I suspect that Deepseek trained its models on publicly-available generative AI tools out there such as ChatGPT.

In other words, this is a very sophisticated way for China to copy what America already pioneered.

However, even this is quite an achievement, as it's not an exact carbon copy.

We'll see where this goes, but the commoditization of generative AI is happening faster than most people expected.
