>>I agree jwk, I just don't see Sony getting a free ride to floppy replacement heaven.<<

This has been the fatal flaw in Iomaniacal thinking. You see, there is already been a floppy replacement--it's called CD-Rom--but in only one aspect. The different roles that floppies played have been divided up among several different formats.

One of the primary uses of floppies was software distribution. This realm is now solidly CD-Rom and will probably not change back to magnetic media. CD is much, much cheaper, and also more reliable. Every computer shipped now includes a CD-Rom. It is the Standard.

Backing up your own system is another use for floppies. This realm has little need for cross-compatibility. Therefore there is room for more competition and more solutions including Zip, CD-RW, SparQ, tape, etc.

If sharing files is paramount, then this is where compatibility is important. But a great many people never need to share files they cannot email or download off the net.

If Iomaniacs are looking for 1:1 replacement with floppies, they are going to be sorely disappointed.
