Contrary to what many believe, there was networking prior to Cisco.
IBM used to be considered the #1 networker. Cisco made it famous. Big difference.

Cisco invented the router and the software behind it that became the standard. To compare CIEN to Cisco you have to ask what is the standard they are going to create.

Do you really think LU or Nortel will never come up with a competitive (cost) product? What are the odds that it will be the next Cisco?

I think T invented voice networking.

Thanks for your interesting point-by-point rebuttal to my earlier post. I think many of your points are quite valid, though I don't have the time at present for a full critique. I had thought that you were long Ciena and were getting burned in this meltdown. I am glad this does not seem to be the case. I have no problem with a scale down buying approach to CIEN, although I still think it premature at current levels.
