There is no borrow cost for shorting intraday... I reduced my portfolio's losses by nearly 40% yesterday with zero borrow fees. Even for longer trades, days to maybe a week or two, the expense for shorting prefers is nominal compared to the capital gains achieved.

I shorted SCE pfds 3+ weeks ago and have been swapping between the J, K, M and N since then. I'm still short some and this week I bought some SCE-L as a kicker since it's $5-6 cheaper.
