There are new kinds of non-zero dispersion shifted fiber developed specifically for WDM. The old stuff that AT&T has in the ground wasn't designed with WDM in mind.

Also remember that there is single-mode fiber for long telecommunications runs and multi-mode fiber is generally used for short spans like campus networks and LAN backbones.

CIEN is addressing all of these markets with their WDM products. Let's see Nortel take their OC-192 product and run it in a short-haul environment. If they can I would be interested to hear how much that would cost and when it is available.

CIEN says that they already have their short haul WDM products in evaluations.

CSCO/DWDM, As I recall from the CSCO conference call CEO Chambers spoke of substantial R&D spending into DWDM. We've known in the past that CSCO tends to cannabilize its own products, what would you think of a CSCO/CIEN combo?
