re: kiz stuff --

I had a real problem with his statements about backwards compatibility and about *a source* stating that if Zip were to replace the floppy, it should have done it in a year. This is absurd. From roll-out to ramp-up to the creation of supply and distribution channels to replace the floppy in one year. Do you think that if Intel and MSW were behind the project and put their resouces to it that even they could have done it in a year? Maybe, but probably not. So, if a turn-around / start-up company doesn't do it in a year that shows the product is fatally flawed? Oh, please........

Consider also our discussion this afternoon about the floppy being replaced by several devices, and that IOM's business plan is to capture the dominate share of the *removable media market*.

KE was right when he foresaw the potential of this niche, and he was right when he deduced that backward compatibility was not a requirement. The news from Micron validates this. We shall soon see if the market validates Micron's decision.

Re KIZ100's latest. Yes, I just read those. And yes, when the mood strikes him, he does appear to be a real FUDmeister. But getting fired by a company will do that to one. You won't hear me say too many nice things about CA.

Didn't he predict ZIP would be killed by at least 2 products? Products that he now seems to pan - Swan and Caleb? Anyway, whether he is right about how it all works out or not, he seems to have some pretty good contacts in the biz.

Senthil...hard to tell about Kiz 100. My work (non tech) with the space program years ago brought me into contact with the likes of Kiz' on an all-too-regular basis. Nearly all are bright as can be, many have an ax to grind or a sacred duty to perform and some are just plain crazy. The amount and quality of information they present can astonish.

The handle, "Kiz 100," certainly points to a relationship with IOM products (real or fantasized). Did he/she get canned? Miss out on a deserved prize or promotion? Offer a superior solution that was passed over? His/her habit of highlighting secret meetings and such and the someone's-out-to-get-me theme border on histrionics and, IMO, do not argue well for credibility...then again, Andy G. DID say, "Only the paranoid survive."

To shift gears just a bit...IOM seems on the threshold of reaching critical mass with Zip. If Zip becomes A drive in a few more boxes...if Dell continues to include and promote it...if it becomes widely available in the $1K segment, well, once again the problem will be, how to make 'em fast enough. If the company is spending 100MM to promote it, I gotta believe they can build it.
I would guess that OEMs are getting some very sweet deals on the drives these days (something to keep in mind when projecting those Q1 numbers, if you ask me). If Sony or others are serious about spoiling the party, they need to SHOW US THE PRODUCT, and they need to do it real soon. I have NO idea if Sony has a loaded gun...if I had to guess, I'd say they probably DO have a time problem, hence the rash of IOM bashing in the media lately. There's a note of desperation in this.

Two questions and a final thought for all: (1) Is Rod is getting a little shrill or, am I just too darn sensitive? (2)Has Trufflette turned on us (trying to lure the Great Michael C. away didn't seem like something a "real" friend would do)? Hmmmmm. And, finally,
I see that RR has rejected Clik! and is insisting on an even smaller "device" for his Palm Pilot. NO, I won't use the G word, I won't, I won't.

Miller Time!
