3COM Weather Report: Toll at least 43 in Fla twisters
Monday February 23 8:42 AM EST

WINTER GARDEN, Fla., Feb. 23 (UPI) _ Police in east and central
Florida have confirmed 43 deaths from a series of powerful
tornadoes that ripped through the region overnight.

Helicopters circled the area early today looking for more victims
as cadaver-sniffing dogs and search crews went door-to-door in
an effort to find survivors. Bulldozers were added to the search
and rescue operation to sift through the destruction.

All area hospitals went on alert for handling mass casualties
and the Red Cross opened shelters that were filling quickly as
daylight broke, allowing suvivors to pick their way through
debris scattered everywhere.

In Osceola County, where officials say 27 people died, two
apartment complexes were flattened and one man died when his
mobile home was thrown onto Florida's Turnpike.

Officials said the confirmed toll included 13 dead in Seminole
County, two dead and one missing in Volusia County, and one dead
in Orange County.

At Rod's Fish Camp in Volusia County, authorities said three
mobile homes were thrown into the St. Johns River, but two people
in the homes were pulled to safety.

Winter Garden police Lt. John Johnson said one apartment complex
had an airboat thrown into a second-story apartment and a
semi-tractor trailer was hurled more than 100 yards and spun
around, as cars were stacked on top of each other.

Orange County sheriff's Lt. Teresa Everett said at least 100
mobile homes were destroyed in the county.

Officials on Florida's Turnpike suspended collection of highway
tolls to help keep traffic moving, while Highway 50, the main
route through Winter Garden, was closed to all but emergency
traffic.

Forecasters from the National Weather Service said they were
amazed at the intensity of the storms triggered by apparent
effects of El Nino that hit the region during Hazardous Weather
Awareness Week.

Missed me, I was south of it.
