I see things a bit differently.

Allegations can easily be checked and disproven, as is the case with the dreaded Samantha Powers. And many others. Particularly when they do not meet the smell test. And the allegations against her seem skunk-like.

Why would a bright woman with a spectacular education whose husband makes a lot of money, who is obligated to file public and substantial financial disclosures, ruin her career, risk criminal liability, etc., for the sake of money, especially as she doesn't seem to need it or has never grasped at it? Doesn't make sense, does it? Bears looking into, out of simple human fairness. Even though I thoroughly disagree with who she is and what she has done.

The cursory examination I gave it suggested that Elon's claim was total male bovine manure. I'm disappointed because he probably knows better.

I feel that we all have (or should feel) a duty to the truth. Spreading an unjustified allegation, or one which does not survive the most cursory examination, violates that duty, especially if it defames someone.

We will make mistakes, but hopefully not because we have been sloppy in our thinking or in our writing. Or because we choose to purposefully ignore the glaringly obvious.
