New Version of Informix Data Director Delivers on Promise of Full Integration With Microsoft Visual Basic 5.0

Data Director for Visual Basic 3.0 Delivers Increased Productivity with "Drag-and-Drop" Development of
Database-Aware Applications and Flexible Web and Windows Deployment

MENLO PARK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 23, 1998-- Informix Corp. (NASDAQ:IFMX - news), the leading provider of innovative
database technology, today announced that it is shipping Version 3.0 of INFORMIX(R)-Data Director(TM) for Visual Basic.

This powerful model-driven data access and data management platform delivers substantial gains in productivity by enabling application developers to
rapidly prototype and build efficient, database-aware workgroup and enterprise applications using a ''drag-and-drop'' approach. Version 3.0
provides tight integration with Visual Basic 5.0, to enable Data Director developers to take advantage of gains in performance, productivity, and Web
and Windows deployment.

Data Director for Visual Basic empowers the millions of Visual Basic developers to accelerate development of database-aware Visual Basic
applications. By providing developers with a model-driven data access platform, Data Director for Visual Basic eliminates the time-consuming task of
writing data access code to add sophisticated database functionality to Visual Basic applications.

This product also makes it easier to maintain these applications by automating all the data access and data management operations of the client
application. Data Director for Visual Basic is part of the Data Director family of data access and management platforms that enable companies to
maintain their investments in mainstream development environments.

''Informix believes in open systems and is committed to ensuring that corporate developers are able to reduce their exposure to risk by using their
preferred, mainstream development environments to develop and deploy database-aware applications,'' said Stephen Hill, Tools Business Unit Vice
President and General Manager at Informix.

''Developers who use Data Director for Visual Basic Version 3.0 protect their investment in existing Visual Basic applications and human resources,
and reduce their time to market by eliminating the time-consuming process of writing the code that interacts with databases.''

''Informix understands what Visual Basic developers need to build mission critical client/server applications for the enterprise,'' stated Paul Gross,
vice president of developer tools at Microsoft. ''Informix is enabling our customers to directly interface their applications with enterprise-wide
databases.''

Greg Schumann, Senior Systems Analyst at Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, is in charge of developing an application to capture
mission information from pilots of the United States Air Force.

He experienced a dramatic increase in productivity when he switched from the ODBC approach he was previously using to Data Director for Visual
Basic: ''Data Director for Visual Basic saves me time. It provides me with views of the database tables from within the Visual Basic environment and,
because it's model-driven, it makes it easy for me to define complex relationships with simple drag-and-drop actions,'' says Schumann.

''Within 10 days of starting to work with Data Director, I had the Visual Basic application up and running, and I estimate that I shaved at least one
month off total development time.''

Leighton Johnson, Senior Data Administrator at AFC Enterprises, found that the Visual Basic 5.0 integration features of Data Director for Visual
Basic Version 3 have simplified his team's work: ''The new version brings fast, easy database connection into the Visual Basic environment -- Data
Director for Visual Basic is now a plug-in within Visual Basic 5.0. We're finding that the new version is even easier to use, and generates tighter, more
robust SQL code. This means that we now spend less time than before on code review.''

Informix Data Director for Visual Basic Version 3.0 delivers productivity, performance and deployment improvements. Developer productivity is
enhanced with the integration of Visual Basic 5.0 with drag-and-drop data access code generation and multiple project support. Support for Visual
Basic Native Code Compilation and Optimized SQL provides performance enhancements.

With support for Visual Basic Active/X Document Creation, Reusable Active/X Components, and Active/X Navigation Control companies have the
flexibility of deploying to Windows or Web environments, allowing them to tailor applications to their specific needs.

Informix Data Director for Visual Basic has a SRP of $1,500 per developer license, and is available today directly from Informix.

>>Do you think IFMX may come head to head against IBM's DB2 in some
>>areas? Is IFMX taking any market share away from IBM?
IFMX has already been doing this, especially in the data warehouse area. Several of the biggest deals involving IBM hardware probably were competitive wins. I know the MCI was one (on SP2 hardware). I have seen several other data warehouses on large IBM hardware that should have been this kind.

I do not know about OLTP, although there the competitive advantage seems to be less for IFMX, so I would expect that IBM does better at holding there.

The new area of competition is in the ORDBMS area, where I consider IFMX and IBM to be the two strongest players in an architectural sense, although IBM seems to have done a much poorer job in the marketing area (because IFMX and Oracle are the first two names you normally hear in this area). There should be a lot of head to head competition here in the next two years, and IFMX may win quite a bit because they seem to have a lot of Datablade developers well along (many already shipping).
