"For late '98 we can expect a 300 MHz C6+ as well as a new version with on-chip
256kB L2 cache."
Actually The 256k L2 could be considered L1 since it runs will run at full bus speed not 1/2 bus speed as in the PII L2 cache. And I also thought I heard it was 512K cache.

<<Anyone know what socket 8 is?>> It's the rectangular socket (not square) for the Pentium Pro. The Pentium Pro is the microprocessor that has two chips - the processor and a level two cache. That's why it's oblong. They never went beyond 200 megahertz with the 'Pro. The cache was available in 256K (most were these), 512K, and a 1024K version. The 512K and 1024K versions were ridiculously expensive and some considered the 256K too expensive also.
