Interesting post.

The Cambridge announcement has a couple of clunkers -- the GSM technology standard (good in Europe, not good in the US), and the idea that people will pay up to $60 a month for the service. That latter statement is just unbelievable. However, they are also aiming at CDMA 911 services, which is relevant here. It looks like a DGPS solution, which is probably more than people need or want to pay for.

As to the Trimble announcement, it's encouraging to see TRMB beefing up their products in the AVL line, where I think they have not done too well. I'll let the engineers evaluate how competitive this combination of features may be.
