FATHER JAMES CROSSMAN Published November 05, 2011 at 11:00 PM Father James Crossman, 90, died Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011, in Essentia Health St. Mary's Medical Center. Father Crossman was retired from pastoral ministry and living at the Benedictine Health Center. He was born Aug. 1, 1921, in Duluth to Roland and Jean Crossman. He attended Minor Seminary at Nazareth Hall in St. Paul and Major Seminary at St. Paul's Seminary. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Duluth June 8, 1946, by Bishop Thomas Welch, in Sacred Heart Cathedral. Over his 65 years of priestly ministry, Father Crossman served parishes in Duluth, Silver Bay and Proctor and taught at Cathedral High School. From 1974-1981 he also worked with the St. Louis County welfare office. While in Duluth, he was one of the founding members of the Lake Superior Life Care Center as well as serving on boards of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and Damiano Center, and in retirement, he was chaplain at St. Ann's Home for six years (1990-1996). Father Crossman also served as the senior associate at the Cathedral of Our Lady from 1996 to 2005. Father Crossman had a great love for people in general but especially for the down and out. He helped countless individuals monetarily as well as spiritually, always seeing the good in them. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roland and Jean; and his brothers, John and William. Father Crossman is survived by several nieces and nephews; brother priests; deacons; and countless friends. VISITATION: Begins 5 p.m. with 7 p.m. wake prayers Monday, Nov. 7, and 9:30 until the 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian burial in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary, 2801 E. Fourth St., Duluth.
