Wow!…. The worst people to ask for advice when preparing for talks with Trump. If true, this explains a lot. Also, it would tell a lot about Zelensky’s judgement. One would expect that after talking to world leaders for many years, he’d know better.

It looks like Zelensky came to believe his own propaganda - that the Russians would not stop with Ukraine - and would continue rolling West. Which, if it were true, would make the Ukraine war - and him - extremely important.

Except for the Bolsheviks, Russia has never shown much interest in controlling the West. Poland and Finland for periods of time belonged to the Empire. Stalin, after WWII, kept many lands under Soviet control. But, OTOH, Tsar Alexander I, who defeated Napoleon and in 1814 marched into Paris - gave the French generous terms, charmed some ladies - and went home. The first page of the Wiki article gives a curious brief summary.
