Company Press Release
Siemens Semiconductors to Manufacture Ramtron's Enhanced Synchronous DRAM Products
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 23, 1998--Ramtron International Corporation's (NASDAQ:RMTR - news) wholly owned subsidiary, Enhanced Memory Systems, Inc. (Enhanced), announced today that Siemens Semiconductors will become a manufacturing source for the Company's enhanced synchronous dynamic random access memory (ESDRAM(TM)) chip.

The agreement with Siemens Semiconductors strengthens Enhanced's manufacturing base beyond the recently announced agreement with IBM Microelectronics. It will enable Enhanced to support the demand for its 133 MHz ESDRAM product as the industry standardizes on 100 and 133 MHz SDRAM for next generation computer applications.

16-megabit (Mbit) ESDRAM production is expected to begin during the second quarter of 1998. ESDRAM components will be manufactured on Siemens' high volume, 16Mbit 0.35-micron DRAM production process using 8-inch silicon wafers. In addition, Siemens has also agreed to produce future generation 64- and 256-megabit ESDRAM products.

''This agreement with Siemens Semiconductors enhances our ESDRAM strategy in several very productive ways,'' explains Craig Rhodine, Enhanced vice president and general manager. ''Siemens' manufacturing process is already ESDRAM friendly, considering their membership in the IBM/Siemens/Toshiba manufacturing partnership. This translates into short process development cycles and highly compatible products across foundry sources.''

Enhanced's ESDRAM product solves current memory bandwidth issues now plaguing the performance of computers using increasingly faster microprocessors. ESDRAM memory technology allows a computer's microprocessor to complete more tasks in less time -- leading to more productive computers. In addition, the ESDRAM delivers the same peak bandwidth and over twice the sustained bandwidth of the emerging Rambus DRAM. ESDRAM products serve in specialty DRAM and fast static RAM markets, which are expected to grow to more than $5 billion by the year 2000, according to InStat, a leading semiconductor industry research firm. In addition, Byte Magazine recently recognized synchronous DRAM, specifically including ESDRAM, among the top 25 technologies for 1998.

The 100 MHz ESDRAM product complies with the fastest latency requirements of Intel's PC-100 specification, the standard for 100 MHz, and future 133MHz, SDRAM operation with Pentium(R)-II chipsets. The ESDRAM has also been proposed as an SDRAM superset standard to the Joint Electron Devices Engineering Councils (JEDEC).

... makes sense. RMTR was quite annoyed with IBM. Siemens will be a much better foundry partner.
