Netanyahu sacks Shin Bet spy chief for assigning blame on supporting Hamas

Netanyahu Sacks Shin Bet Chief: Why Now, and How Big Is the Danger to Israeli Democracy?
Israeli democracy is now in grave danger, and the Supreme Court cannot protect it alone. It's up to Israelis to decide if they'll accept Netanyahu's hostile power-grab – and how far they will go to stop it

Netanyahu announced Sunday evening that he made the decision to fire Bar because he had lost confidence in him. The move was expected; Netanyahu wanted to take this step months ago, yet the news was still met with shock and outrage from the opposition, and the public who oppose his policies.

Netanyahu has acted against Bar using his typical methods: leaks, ugly insinuations, and slander disseminated through his obedient media outlets. Netanyahu and his associates accused Bar, who has been in office for three and a half years, of being a "weak official" who, although he was part of Israel's negotiating team, didn't actually know how to negotiate with Hamas. The latest baseless accusation was that Bar threatened to blackmail Netanyahu as part of "a full-scale campaign of extortion and threats."
