>> Even when he was a hard lefty, I found it difficult to take issue with his journalism.

When I started seeing him he would appear on the Pete Dominic, an extreme left radio talk show. Matt worked for Rolling Stone then, and had made it clear what kinds of articles they wanted.

He was always brilliant on Russia; his work history explains why:

"Before joining Rolling Stone in 2004, Matt Taibbi worked for several publications and outlets. He began his career as a freelance reporter in the former Soviet Union. He then worked as a sports journalist and editor for The Moscow Times, an English-language newspaper in Russia. In 1997, Taibbi co-founded and co-edited The eXile, a provocative English-language tabloid in Moscow, alongside Mark Ames. After returning to the United States in 2002, he founded The Beast, a Buffalo-based newspaper, where he served as editor for about a year. Following that, he worked as a columnist for the New York Press before transitioning to Rolling Stone. Additionally, during his early career, Taibbi contributed as a freelancer to publications like The Nation and Playboy."

IMO, working in USSR was paying dues that more reporters would benefit from.

He has 500K subscribers now on Substack for Racket News, which includes a weekly podcast with Walter Kirn.

Best hundred bucks I spend for my subscription there every year.
