Democrats’ impossible choice on the shutdown

Being in the minority in Congress is not fun. It’s even less fun when you also don’t have the presidency. That means the party in power can inflict any number of impossible choices (and votes) upon you.

Democrats are facing just such an impossible choice right now, ahead of a potential government shutdown this weekend. And they don’t seem to know quite what to do with it yet — for good reason.

There are quite simply no good or obvious answers for Democrats right now ahead of a Senate vote on whether to pass the GOP’s government funding bill — which would keep the government funded through September at largely the same level as it is now — by the midnight Friday deadline.
