Ed, - My view of the SC political arena -

Back from a week of R&R in windy Florida. Looking to become an ex-snowbird of the north, for the warmer climes of the the "Sunshine State".

A thought occurred to me as I was reading the most recent gaming legislation in the "State". If the vote in the Senate is as close as it appears, we should all beware of some possible political wranglings by Gov. Beasley, as this *IS* an election year. Political patronage, or the promises thereof, can be a strong lever when it comes down to the "final tally". He, through political promises, might easily sway some borderline pro-gaming senators, into turning the tide in his favor. We should not under-estimate the power of incumbency, as it can always be played as a trump card if the situation arises, and that situation may have arisen with the forthcoming Senate vote. Any politico worth his/her salt, and running for re-election, (including Gov. Beasley), will play this political pandering game if he/she feels the action is warranted, and in this case IMHO, I think it may be.

Ed: Sooner is worse, later is better. The Senate President has authority to decide which bills get heard and when. The Senate President, Drummond, is a co-sponsor of bill 947. If the anti-VGM forces don't think they have the votes, Drummond won't allow the bill to the floor yet. He will play for time to try to sway more Senators. If the bill is brought up soon, that strongly suggests Drummond feels he has the votes to pass it.
