Good write up of why and Not.. Canada is a sovereign nation, and the people wish to keep it that way. We had an excellent relationship with our neighbors to the north despite political warfare. Now, it seems as if anti-American sentiments are growing across Canada since President Trump has been keen on potentially annexing it. For our Canadian readers— as you know with Trudeau and now Carney, our leaders do not always speak on behalf of those they claim to represent. Americans have no desire to annex Canada. In fact, the majority on both sides of the political spectrum thought Trump was simply mocking Trudeau when he proposed making Canada a state. The majority of Americans respect Canada’s sovereignty and wish we could lay this topic to rest already. I have met more Canadians here in Florida than ever before. The common complaints are taxes and the inability to vote for the head of state. After Trudeau, more and more are complaining about the Parliamentary System. Canada merged with the United States, it would do so not as one state, but each province would become a state, plus the two territories would become states, making that 12 in total, and that would mean 24 senators from Canada. This would be a political nightmare since more than 50% of Canadians are anti-Trump even before this 51st state rhetoric. If that did take place, they would most likely vote with the Democrats, and that would throw the Republicans out of power. I, for one, would move to South America for instead of making America Great Again, it would be the final nail in the coffin. I cannot imagine the Republicans going along with that. This is Trump's classic rhetoric for compromise. Carney can't be that stupid. Look at Puerto Rico and its relationship with the United States, which is seriously flawed, complex, and difficult at best. There are three possible solutions: Independence, Statehood (becoming the United States’ 51st state), or keeping the status quo. Congress has the authority to admit Puerto Rico as a state through legislation without requiring a constitutional amendment or approval from existing states. The same would apply to Canada. Back in 1950, Puerto Rican nationalists attempted to assassinate President Harry Truman. (see: The Plot to Kill President Truman . (2015, November).
