we all know that Trump is beholden to fossil fuel interests,

What is less clear is that the financial interests of the USA are also beholden to fossil fuels. The US currency was stable and valued for many years because the dollars could be traded for gold. The USA went off the gold standard 100 years ago. Instead, an agreement has been made that fossil fuels would only be sold in US dollars thereby exchanging the backing by gold to a backing by oil.

A reduced carbon output threatens not only the oil companies, and car companies, and freeway construction companies, but also all others who count on the dollar being the reserve currency of the world.
