Hyundai to announce a $20 billion investment in the United States (CNN) South Korea’s Hyundai to announce $20 billion U.S. investment (CNBC) The factory in Louisiana will be a $5B steel plant, and it will supply steel for Hyundai's car manufacturing in America. Hyundai didn't mention where the other $15B will go, but presumably they'll go toward additional car manufacturing plants. One reason for Hyundai investing heavily in domestic manufacturing is the popularity of their electric Ioniq, which sold over 56K units last year in America. That makes up a sizable fraction of the 800K cars sold by Hyundai in America last year. And with the decline of the Muskwagen, Hyundai is looking at a prime opportunity to take marketshare away from Tesla. Make no mistake, however. The trend toward reshoring manufacturing already started under Brandon thanks in large part due to the pandemic.
