Musk is wrong, we should have empathy for people who smoke crack cocaine, or struggle with any kind of addiction, really. That doesn't mean condoning harmful behavior, but it does mean recognizing that addiction is usually not just about bad choices or moral failure. It's often tied to trauma, poverty, mental health issues, lack of support systems, or a mix of all of those.

Empathy helps us understand why someone might end up in that situation and makes us more open to solutions that actually help, like access to treatment, harm reduction, and support, instead of just punishment or shame. It’s not about excusing the behavior, but about seeing the human being behind it.
