Spoke with retired broker who was active in 1987.
He tells me that on the fateful Monday the markets fell ~25% in one day.
And in the case of Hong Kong, 27 futures brokers went bankrupt on that day, summarily.
Bankers threatened clients.

At the time I was employed in a real business happily building up cash savings and held no financial product positions
I was the CFO
The expat workers in the company did not report to work that day
All terrified as they were all near retirement age
