Sadly, we are going to be witnessing an awful lot of cognitive dissonance going forward. When a worldview shaped and molded by propaganda meets cold, hard reality, bad things can happen. Some people peaked in elementary school on the playground. They still view the world as a place where they can beat up the weaker kids and steal their lunch money if only those teachers would only mind their own business. Unfortunately, the world doesn't operate that way.
