We've purchased chicks but they were all pre-sexed so did not have the rooster culling problem. When our hens die from old age or we lose them to hawks or raccoons we replace them with them with hens that are just about to lay. It's easier. The eggs really are very tasty. On another note, lots of money was made this morning for those "in the know".
