The word 'franchise' is used loosely. The franchise here is the fact that they have very little competition, and a strong (time-constrained) demand cycle. That's all.

Also, I would never count on a 'franchise' business anyway, any franchise business. Making money in franchise businesses is no more inevitable than any other 'business'. If it was, we would have the nifty 50 again, and NASDAQ would disappear. The paths of investors over the years are littered with 'inevitable' investments (Sperry-Univac, Control Data, etc) that held franchise positions. Assuming any business can maintain their position forever assumes you will lose money overall.
