Intel's Firewire plans. This is important because it allows camcorders, DVD players, TVs, computer monitors, settop boxes, and anything else to have enough bandwidth to send quality video to each other. It allows the convergence of real-time high quality digital video with both the TV and the Computer. That's the real story of convergence. It's not about the computer and the TV, its about digital video. David has a vision of just one box in every home. Everything plugs into it. [INTC] is shoring up 1394 efforts and plans to sample core logic with the bus in the second quarter, Multimedia Week has learned. Given Intel's pervasive reach, the company's 1394 agenda likely will do more to spur adoption of the technology than any product introduction to date. And it should give PC peripheral makers and consumer electronics vendors a strong impetus to add the margin-boosting bus to their products. Intel officials would not say when they will incorporate the high-speed bus into core logic but did say they expect to see PC manufacturers shipping products with 1394 on the motherboard later this year. Officials from two companies closely tied to 1394 development efforts confirmed Intel's second-quarter 1394 road map. For hardware manufacturers to ship PCs with 1394 chipsets in the fourth quarter, they have to receive core logic samples by mid-year, lending further credence to Intel's planned second-quarter ship date. Historically Intel's core logic refreshes have included silicon for both the north bridge and south bridge of the motherboard, but David Fair, Intel's 1394 program manager, hinted that the company may have a different strategy in mind for the high-speed bus. "There's no reason why we can't rev pieces for the north bridge and south bridge independently," he said. Such a strategy would allow the company to implement the technology without having to redesign core logic completely-a development effort that would make it difficult to meet a second quarter sampling date. Fair indicated that the first applications for the technology will be digital cameras and camcorders. And because digital camcorders and cameras are more popular in Asia than in the UNited States he expects 1394 PCs to ship more quickly in Japan. Fred Leung, strategic marketing director for Acer Laboratories Inc.,(ALi) agreed and said the motivation among PC vendors selling in Asia is higher. ALi plans to add 1394 to the south bridge of the company's Aladdin 5 chipset. Nancy Hartsoch, ALi vice president of sales and marketing, is targeting the third quarter for a ship date. Sony Electronics Inc. [SNE] has taken the lead in adding digital capabilities to consumer PCs and is likely to be the first company to ship 1394 PCs. Compaq Computer Corp. [CPQ] is a big proponent of Device Bay, a PC configuration that includes 1394 and USB. The manufacturer is expected to be among the first companies to ship a 1394 PC. "Companies more invested in consumer electronics are likely to push it harder," Leung said. (Acer Labs, 408/467-7456; Intel, 408/ 765-8080.)
