Normally at an intersection with a traffic light you will have wide white lines, if your within that zone when the light changes to yellow, you should be able to make it through the light without having to slam on your brakes.
They place the distance of the wide white lines out based on the speed limit.

we have too many who jump the light or run the light. I have never seen it so bad as in Florida. weekly intersection crashes I usually count to a quick three when a light turns green for safety of being hit by another car in an intersection.
