Well yes, time is a very big factor here. Xi has a lifetime appointment while Trump has midterm elections in 18 months.

Off shoring jobs at cheaper labor has been extremely profitable for multinational corporations and the US stock market. Look where SPX was trading in the mid 90s and where it is trading today. It has produced massive prosperity for many. If one can produce a product at a cheaper cost outside the USA without sacrificing quality, why not do it? It is called free trade, emphasizing free.

Margins are highest in service businesses, not in manufacturing. I don't get why Trump is so obsessed with returning to the industrial age. We are in the information age.

People are free to choose their line of work..

India has already offered 0% tariffs. Japan is willing to play ball too. The problem is with Trump. He is obsessed with his tariffs. Again, Japan has promised to sell all of its US bond holdings if Trump does not remove tariffs on Japanese cars.

China is willing to play ball too. But when you place 145% tariffs on a country, you have basically said FU to that country in terms of trade.

And no, I don't get it.

He saw manufacturing and the jobs move to China and other countries, while the US stood by and did nothing to save them.

Blame taxes, stifling greenie rules, regulations and mandates, and expensive labor (unions). Tariffs alone won't correct that imbalance and will only drive up inflation.
