He's not claiming to be the setter of standards. I think his observation relates to the fact that most consumer needs are met by current cpus available. I don't think a 386 is current.

You are right about people will buy whatever CPU/notebook combination they think will meet their needs and budget. But like your cost/benefit analysis on selling your intel shares, people will weigh the benefit of dropping another couple of grand for a modest performance improvement vs less performance for no new investment.

I believe that a lot of people feel (and this is what I believe is Brookwood's assertion) that the extra couple of grand is not worth it at this point.
