another win Bay Networks Provides Leading-Edge ATM Network For Emory University's Roberto C. Goizueta Business School; Network Enables Distance Learning Applications SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 24, 1998--Bay Networks(R), Inc. (NYSE:BAY) today announced it is providing the network infrastructure for the Roberto C. Goizueta Business School, Emory University's new state-of-the-art business school based in Atlanta, Ga. The Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) network enables videoconferencing and distance learning applications that allow students to access lectures at other universities and participate in classes while off campus. With this network upgrade, Emory University and the Goizueta Business School are helping students and teachers to use technology to enhance decision making and gain competitive advantages. Bay Network's technology will allow the Goizueta Business School to fully integrate audio-visual and computer technology into the classroom. Videoconferencing and distance learning programs will enhance students' educational experience by providing access to lectures and experts that would otherwise be unavailable. With Bay Networks' equipment, business school students can remotely dial-in to the network, allowing them to work together on collaborative projects and hold online discussions with faculty, alumni and business leaders. "It was extremely important for us to provide our students and faculty with the best in academic and technological excellence," said Barbara Maaskant, executive director of Information Services for the Goizueta Business School. "This meant investing in leading technology to keep ahead of today's highly competitive education environment. With Bay Networks' award-winning networking equipment, we have achieved these goals and the Goizueta Business School is now one of the most technologically advanced business schools in the world." Information Center Replaces Traditional Computing Lab An Information Center provides voice/video/data connectivity for specialized applications, multimedia use, video development, technology investigation and small-group training. In planning the network, the school made the decision to move away from costly and quickly outdated fixed computing labs and transfer hardware and software ownership to the students. A student notebook ownership program was launched and public access to the network was designed throughout the building. "The success of this approach greatly alleviates pressure on the Information Center," states Maaskant. The school also successfully piloted a mobile lab concept for "hands on" computer training. With classroom desktop connectivity, virtually every classroom can be a computer training lab. The Information Center is completely modular with multimedia-capable PCs, high-speed printers, scanners, specialized equipment, and study tables with technology for students with notebooks to do group work. "Bay Networks had a perfect network solution that can scale to support Emory's future connectivity requirements," said Maaskant, "Not only did the installation go smoothly, but we were extremely pleased with the top-quality, attentive technical support we received from Bay Networks." The Network The Goizueta Business School is deploying an ATM backbone network using Bay Networks' Centillion 100(TM) ATM switches, BayStack System 5000(TM) intelligent hubs, Backbone Link Node (BLN(R)) routers and BayStack(TM) hubs to provide on-site and remote high-speed access to email, the Emory library catalog, Emory business databases and resources on the Internet. The school is also using Bay Networks' Optivity(R) network management application, enabling staff to measure and simplify network performance and plan for future capacity.
